Pink Shoes and Peppermint Soap

Posted by kim on February 9, 2010

What does this Simple Shoes Women’s Satire Sneaker and this handmade natural Peppermint Body Bar have in common?  Besides the pink swirls? Give up? They are both considered “organic”.

The Peppermint Body Bar is only one of over a dozen handmade natural soap options available from Best Bath Store. Organic extracts, blended essential oils and natural botanicals make up various aromas, including cocoa butter, coffee, eucalyptus, evergreen, honey milk, shea butter, vanilla bean and more.

The Women’s Satire – Silk in Rosewine Sneaker with tie dye silk uppers  is made with certified organic cotton linings and footbeds. The “pedbed” (the cushiony and supportive stuff at the bottom of the shoe) is made of super soft and squishy polyurethane foam and recycled rubber. The bottom of the shoe is made from recycled car tires. The foot form inserts are made of post consumer recycled paper. And th shoebox that they come in is made of post–consumer recycled paper, soy based printing ink, natural latex and starch based glue. Available from Simple Shoes, $60 with Free Shipping.

All of this “going green” talk has inspired me to start living more healthy.  In fact, just this week I started recycling. And next week, I plan to attempt to make my own homemade laundry detergent.

This holiday season, instead of giving another towel warmer, foot massager, electric razor, cat calendar, crumb duster or electonic jewelry cleaner, give TOMS shoes! For every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of shoes to a child in need. One For One.

1,000,000 men, women and children are suffering from Podoconiosis in Ethiopia.  Podoconiosis is a soil-transmitted disease caused by walking, farming, running, playing and working barefoot in silica-rich soil. Silica is ancient volcanic glass that penetrates the skin and makes its way into the lymphatic system. The feet and lower legs swell.  Open sores and ulcers develop and infection sets in.  But here is the good news… Podoconiosis is 100% preventable without the use of a vaccine or expensive antibiotic.  The disease is prevented simply be wearing shoes!

And that’s where you come in! This holiday season, TOMS wants to give 30,000 pairs of shoes to children in Ethiopia, and they need your help! So for every pair of shoes purchased (either for yourself or to give as a gift), TOMS will give another pair of shoes to a child in need! Visit TomsShoes.com for more information or to purchase! (They also offer free US shipping!)
